Goal setting is a very common practice now days, but a lot of people seem to have trouble reaching their goals. Different people of course make different mistakes in their goal setting. Here are the five most common mistakes

  1. Setting Fuzzy Goals – Fuzzy goals are the fairly generic ones. Examples of this are goals like I want a new car or I want to be out of debt. People tend to set goals like this, but then they have no idea what the cost of that end result is.

  2. Setting too easy or too hard timelines – Very few people are really good at estimating the time it will truly take to get something done, myself included. When we set too easy of a timeline, we tend to become lazy and not push ourselves at all thinking we have plenty of time. On the flip side when we set too hard of one, we become stressed and realize that we’re going to have to drop something in our timeline. Either of these scenarios mean that we struggle to actually accomplish our goals.

  1. Not stretching yourself – People here all the time to start off setting an easy goal to help you start building momentum. I’ve found that this tends to be poisonous as it more often encourages people to keep setting easy goals and never really growing in the ways that are needed for their bigger (and harder) goals.

  2. Discussing the goal with the wrong people – A goal of any real size we tend to discuss with other people, sometimes while we’re doing it, others before we begin. Only discuss your goals with people that will be both encouraging and truthful with you. You don’t want negative people pulling you down, and you don’t want someone just blowing smoke either.

  1. Not having a plan to get there – A goal without a plan is simply a dream. Plain and simple. If you have a goal that will take you more than 5 minutes to finish and you don’t have a plan your chances of successfully completing it go way down. Take a little bit of time to plan.

Keep these five mistakes in mind when you are setting and working towards your goals and you will find it much easier to achieve what you are going for.
