Thanks for your comments Nick. I too celebrate Christmas, but as a Christian I feel I'm very tolerant of other people and their beliefs. You've hit the key thing that I've tried to teach my daughter - it's about respect. Just because we don't agree with someone, doesn't mean we can't respect them as a human being because we're all God's creation and therefore all related. Your post gave me just the "shove" I needed to complete my Christmas Day post on Facebook.

Thanks again and have a very Merry Christmas.

Very well said and I agree completely. Good definition- goals without action are simply wishes. Sometimes though, a vision for something can be held for many years as it slowly takes shape and waits for the right time and place - a kairos moment. There is a distinct difference between a goal and a vision. A goal is more concrete and encompasses a planned outcome, and generally assumes specific steps that must be taken to achieve that outcome. A true vision comes from the soul, a desire for self-actualization in some form. Holding that vision in tension through life experiences, always accepting its amorphous quality will gradually reveal necessary goals along the way- again at the kairos moments. Most importantly, we need to make sure that our visions and goals are not generated by our egos, but come from our divinely connected true self. Ego may supply some of the learned tools to "take it public", but it must never be the architect.

Great question.

Goal setting is easy & impossible. Easy to declare "I'd like to..." or "I intend to..." Lots of lists of end states of big goals.

Also easy to declare tactical "to do" lists --- what do I need to check off over the next few days. Sometimes I even deliver on them. It is always interesting to discover a dated "to do list", reflect on what wasn't done, and whether or not it matters.

What I haven't been able to crack the code on, and I'm mindful it the gap is motivation and focus not magic, is making the link between long and short term.

Two challenges:
- Creating a clear set of next steps / milestones to move from current to desired long-term end state
- Avoiding the "tyranny of the urgent" that causes existing priorities to be cast aside for the new pressing matter (or interesting distraction)
