<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –>

Goal setting is a very common practice now days, but a lot of people seem to have trouble reaching their goals. Different people of course make different mistakes in their goal setting. Here are the five most common mistakes

  1. Setting Fuzzy Goals – Fuzzy goals are the fairly generic ones. Examples of this are goals like I want a new car or I want to be out of debt. People tend to set goals like this, but then they have no idea what the cost of that end result is.

  2. Setting too easy or too hard timelines – Very few people are really good at estimating the time it will truly take to get something done, myself included. When we set too easy of a timeline, we tend to become lazy and not push ourselves at all thinking we have plenty of time. On the flip side when we set too hard of one, we become stressed and realize that we’re going to have to drop something in our timeline. Either of these scenarios mean that we struggle to actually accomplish our goals.

  1. Not stretching yourself – People here all the time to start off setting an easy goal to help you start building momentum. I’ve found that this tends to be poisonous as it more often encourages people to keep setting easy goals and never really growing in the ways that are needed for their bigger (and harder) goals.

  2. Discussing the goal with the wrong people – A goal of any real size we tend to discuss with other people, sometimes while we’re doing it, others before we begin. Only discuss your goals with people that will be both encouraging and truthful with you. You don’t want negative people pulling you down, and you don’t want someone just blowing smoke either.

  1. Not having a plan to get there – A goal without a plan is simply a dream. Plain and simple. If you have a goal that will take you more than 5 minutes to finish and you don’t have a plan your chances of successfully completing it go way down. Take a little bit of time to plan.

Keep these five mistakes in mind when you are setting and working towards your goals and you will find it much easier to achieve what you are going for.

It's coming to the time of year when we start reflecting on what's important to us.  One of those things for me is freedom of speech.  I hate the term “Happy Holidays”.  I celebrate Christmas.  If you don't that's fine.  You can greet me however you want.  But be proud of what you are and what you celebrate.  I am basically a Christian at heart, but have known those of many different backgrounds.  And the key to getting along and enjoying everyone's presence is to realize that they are different.  You don't have to like everything about everyone in your life, but realize that those who are sincere in their beliefs don't threaten you.  If it's something you can't reconsile in your head then just don't be friends with them, but still treat them with respect.

Our beliefs are exactly that, beliefs.  They aren't facts.  They are what we think and feel is right.  Do we have proof?  Sometimes we think we do, but that proof is rarely universally accepted.  Just acknowledge that.  And also accept that maybe we can learn from people of different backgrounds, and maybe they can learn from us.

And just because something is different doesn't make it right or wrong.  A Christian, a Muslism, a Jew, a Buddist, a Taoist, a Hindu, an Agnostic, and an Atheist can all get along fine, so long as they all mutually respect each other and learn how to love each other.  Are there times when this won't work?  Of course.  If one side shows complete lack of respect for another, it is the other's right as a human being to defend themselves, but people must be reasonable.  When there is at least one side that isn't, that is where conflict and war come in.  And what ever your beliefs on war, I believe that there are times that it is justified.  But also out of times of conflict and war can come great things.  Look at how Japan and Germany excelled after World War II.  Look how the Cold War between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. brought about a dramatic change in Eastern Europe in a way that a regular armed conflict almost certainly couldn't.

There will always be differences of opinions between peoples.  There will always be new things and ways of doing things that people try.  Just try to remember the basis of almost all religions is love and respect for one another.  You have a right to your beliefs, and others have a right to theirs.  So long as people take responsiblity for their beliefs and actions the world will continue to improve.

Take action.

Act with respect.

Keep going Upwards and Onwards.

Merry Christmas!

Nick

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you in the U.S. And to those of you around the world, I wish you the blessings of family and friends and good food, warmth and love.  Thanksgiving is truly a wonderful time.

In the past few days, I've been innundated with emails from different people about the need for gratitude in our lives, and I think it's true.  Do you feel good when you're griping about something bad that's happening in your life?  Of course not, you feel bad.  But how do you feel when you are thinking about the good things in your life and how much you appreciate them?  You feel great!  So even if you don't feel like being thankful today and appreciate the others around you, do it anyways for your own selfish reason that it will make you feel good ;) .  And don't forget.  You can do this every day!

Happy Thanksgiving

If you’re anything like me, you’ve read a ton of personal development books over the years.  Some of my personal favorites tend to be the grandaddies of the personal development work.  Things like “Psycho-Cybernetics”, “The Richest Man in Bablyon”, “See You at the Top” are some of the great books that I’ve read that I would recommend to pretty much anyone the is interested in personal development.  The best of the best though is the classic “Think and Grow Rich”.

“Think and Grow Rich” talks about all aspects of personal development, including goal setting, mastermind groups, visualization, and other common themes.  One thing that a lot of people don’t know that is that “Think and Grow Rich” is actually a distillation of Napoleon Hill’s larger work “The Law of Success” which is a 16 volume masterpiece.  So basically, “Think and Grow Rich” is basically kind of a Cliff’s notes of everything that you need to know to succeed.  I’ve read both versions, the 16 volume beast and the smaller and more concise single volume and let me tell you.  “Think and Grow Rich” is the way to go.

While other books may concentrate on one specific aspect of success, “Think and Grow Rich” is the glue that holds everything else together.  If you read this book and follow all of it’s recommended actions, you will be well on your way to a better life.

Now you may ask, “Why the heck is he going on about this book?  I’ve already seen from a ton of different people that it’s great.  He’s just telling me what I already know.”  Well to be honest, I have a friend, Vic Johnson, that has a goal to get this book to 1,000,000 new people.  He believes that doing so could be a world changing thing.  To that end, he’s actually giving away 1,000,000 copies of “Think and Grow Rich”.  There’s just the usual nominal shipping charge (it’s less than $5, you might pay that much just for the gas to get to the bookstore!).

So take advantage of this great offer for this incredible book right now by clicking on the link below:

Let’s help Vic reach his goal by helping ourselves by getting, reading, and applying the principles of this classic book.

I just got done reading the book Rhinceros Success (which I highly recommend), and there was one part in there that really got me thinking and stuck with me through the whole book. There was a part that said, not only do you have to keep your goal singularly in front of you, but that you need to charge it down as well. Think about it for a second and you’ll see it’s an obvious truth that most of us ignore.

We live in a world that has accepted affirmations and the law of attraction and all sorts of other names for the same thing that has been described through the ages. We become what we think about. But that phrase isn’t entirely correct. There is a little bit more that should be added on. The correct phrase should be “We become what we think about and act on”. I know that for myself, the times in my life when I achieved the most the quickest were those when I believed I could achieve the goal and took massive action towards that goal on a usually daily basis.

Then there are times in my life where I have floundered and basically gone nowhere. What was my problem? I had my goals out there that I wanted, but I took little if any action towards them. I was just wishing they would happen.

Look at your own life. I’m sure you’ll see examples of both things, even though you may not have realized it at the time it was happening to you. Goals without action are simply wishes. And wishes rarely come true. So make your wishes into reality by putting focused action behind them. Start now. Keep going tomorrow. Just do something to make progress and do it now.

Ok.  It took me a bit to get all this put together, but I think that you’re really going to like this.  I’ve got a 10 page report for you and almost a half hour of video.  There is so much here that I decided to just create a seperate page for this apart from the rest of the blog.  It’s all free of course, so I hope you enjoy.  If you like it, please let me know by coming back here and commenting, or just simply sending me a tweet (@learntosetgoals).  I had a lot of fun creating this for you and hope you enjoy it just as much, not to mention the part about it being a lot of really great info!  Enjoy!

I was asked recently by one of my followers on twitter why am I a goal setting genius and it really kind of made me think.  Basically, I’m not going to say that I know everything because I don’t.  Anyone who makes that claim, run far, far away from.  What I am going to say is that I have studied goal setting achievement for about a decade and-a-half now, a little bit over that, getting close to two decades.

I’ve discovered a lot in that time.  I’ve certainly made my share of mistakes and I’ve made my share of successes as well.

One thing that I have found over that time though, is that I am great at helping people get what they want.

Now, it’s been everything from a career change to a certification to different education, there’s all sorts of things, and it’s just a matter of I’ve always been good at helping.

“Okay, so you’re good at helping people, that’s great, no, that’s probably good for me, but does that make you a goal setting genius?”

Well, long story short, the successes and failures that I’ve had, I’ve had time to hone and perfect a lot of what I do.  And in that time, I’ve been able to develop different thoughts patterns and different styles of doing things and have come to a number of realizations.

One of the first is that everybody is different.  Everybody will have a different way that they do things and that they can get things done.  Because of this, I’ve realized that while you can set up generic goal setting structure, it’s not going to be perfect for everyone, and that there is some customization needed and that’s actually what I try to do with my eBook is set up a system that’s generic enough that it can work for everyone, but at the same time, it can also be flexible enough that a person can customize it to their own specific needs.  Now, obviously, that’s not necessarily as easy task to do, so I tried to make things as generic and yet flexible as possible, something that everybody can use but will still adapt to their own particular way of doing things and their own particular need.

Now this is not the easiest thing to do when creating a system because systems are basically sets of rules to follow. So flexibility is not an easy thing. But I did again do my best to get that in there and help make that work so that you can actually work within the system and yet do your own thing.

Now another thing that I believe makes me a goal setting genius is just purely the experience that I’ve had. I’ve had numerous failures.  That’s one thing that I’m going to say is when you’re on your road to achievement, you are going to fail, you are going to do it a lot. But that’s how you learn. We learn from failing. So get used to it, get going and do it, and you can use it to help you build up that mental toughness so that you can go and achieve what you want. I have also had my share of successes. I remember early in my IT career I had a boss who said, you go out and get this certification and you will get a 50% raise. I could see myself doing that, I could see me getting the certification. I could see me having that 50% raise knowing how great it would be. All the things that you always hear about in those Law of Attraction and achievement things.  The visualization. The feeling it. Thinking what it would be like and picturing yourself at that point.

I was able to do that, I wasn’t even thinking about it.

It didn’t hit me until years later that that’s what I had done. But it was something that doing that and going through that. That helped to show me exactly what I could do and exactly how amazingly it worked. I mean that 50% raise was put on my plate. I finished up a certification that normally takes at least a good six months to a year in six weeks. I just pounded it out because I knew I wanted it right then right there as quickly as I could. And that’s the power of having that visualization.

That’s some of the experience that I have and that is one of the things that I like to share with people is my experience and my successes.  Because you learn from your successes just like you learn from your failures.  The only thing is you can learn from your failures instantly and from your successes you may not realize it right away.

Just because you are like “Okay that worked”, but you don’t necessarily know why it did.

Something I can do from my experience is I can help you to analyze your successes and see what works for you so that you know next time you do this instead of just doing a wandering aimlessly thing.

There are just all sorts of things you can do with goal setting.  There are all sorts of different ways that it can be done.  Most people have heard of the whole SMART goal setting thing and it is something that I agree with because it is part of the basics of goal setting, it the basic of the Law of Attraction and a lot of other different methodologies of achievement.  It comes under different names but it is something that is, like I said, it is just basic.

So you just go and use that and it can help get you started, but there is more than that as well.

So if you know the basics of goal setting, that is great.  I can help get you to a higher level.

If you are brand new to goal setting or you just kind of heard a little bit about it, but you don’t really know much more than maybe just write it down, that is fine too.

I love helping people at all levels.

Now, I feel like I could talk for a very long time on this because it is something that I think that just is so essential and explain some of my credentials to you and why I think I am goal setting genius, I mean there is just so much there.  I promised on of my Twitter followers that I would get a blog post up about this and I wanted to get it done.

So I am going to leave it right there.  I look forward to any comments that he might have.  Please if you have any more questions put them in the comments.  I would be lucky to answer them for you.  Or alternatively, just hit me up on Twitter.  You can reach me there at learntosetgoals and it is all one word so just follow me in Twitter there.  You guys are great, I’ll talk to you later.

Upwards and onwards.

Ps. So, I’m thinking of doing a special offer with the audio book because I know some people learn better with audio than text.  I did try to include as much in the ebook with the text to help you more visual learners, those who do better by reading and something I’ve been thinking about for a while, just haven’t quite decided on how to do it is to create a video series on how to go about doing proper goal funding.  This would be even more in-depth than the eBook.  So, if you guys are interested in that, leave a message on the comments or hit me up on twitter, let me know what you want to learn.  Let me know if there’s something that you’re not quite sure about.  It’s never a bad thing to ask questions.  You can hear the same thing from 50 different people and you’ll have 50 different explanations of it, so you might not always understand the basis behind all of it.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Let me know what it is that you’d like to learn about and I will do my best to deliver that to you.

Every year you set New Year’s resolution (i.e. you try to set new goals), but for most of us they just crash.  Take a listen to this carcast to hear what you can do to not only keep your goal out there, but actually achieve the goals you set instead of just letting them flounder like most people.  Don’t forget to leave me a comment to let me know what you think and if you have any other suggestions!
